“Mona is not so much a character as a cliché of desolation, a repository of stupid, broken dreams. Refined and evasive, like Blanche du Bois, she is, almost by theatrical convention, a pathological liar. Sandy Dennis, the faded Madonna of the American screen, plays her with the familiar rabbity smile, the sudden look of dumbfounded terror. She is perhaps less frenetic than in the past, but Sandy Dennis, is, finally, too stylized to take us below the surface of whatever she’s playing.”
